Corporate Health Report Card to Measure Wellness Spending ROI

EXAN'S CORPORATE HEALTH REPORT CARD program installs micro-measurements into your business to identify direct and indirect health-care costs.

Once identified, wellness spending can be measured through the completion of an annual health report card to determine wellness spending ROI.

Details/Procedures:
Web Health's senior analysts meets with key people within your organization to develop/install measuring tools to collect and track data in the following areas:

  • Attrition
  • Absenteeism
  • Disability
  • Workplace Stress
  • Ergonomic Health
  • Sleep Disorders
  • Presenteeism
  • Physical Illness
  • Mental Illness
  • Family Health
  • Addiction
  • Increased Benefit Program Costs
  • Increased EAP/EAFP Costs

Exan develops measuring procedures to determine all annual wellness spending initiatives.

Exan prepares an annual corporate health report card to determine the effectiveness of wellness initiatives and to measure return-on-investment.

Exan submits a report evaluating the effectiveness of wellness initiatives and where change/new initiatives/fortification should occur.

Return on Investment Case Histories

THE COST OF POOR EMPLOYEE HEALTH is growing and costing companies and organizations thousands of dollars per employee every year. The impact of rising health-care costs, combined with low productivity, absenteeism and high turnover rates, is staggering. A conservative, well-documented scientific study (Chapman, Summex Corporation, "Understanding the Economic Return from Worksite Wellness Series: Methods for Determining Economic Return and ROI of Your Program") estimates the direct and indirect health-care costs for an average employee at approximately $15,985 US for 2004. High-risk employees with three or more health risk factors could cost twice that or more. Add to this the fact that health-care costs in both the U.S. and Canada will increase significantly each year for the foreseeable future, and the impact that health has on a corporation's bottom line can no longer be ignored.

To become an employer of choice in a shrinking labor market, corporations must have employee programs that can attract top talent to their business. Organizations that incorporate wellness programs have a higher likelihood of fostering a high-performance culture, which translates into higher profits.

A comprehensive study conducted by Larry Chapman, MPH, senior consultant with Summex Corporation, shows the return on investment was in the range of $2.05 to a high of $19.41 for every dollar invested. The overall average return on investment was $5.03 for every one dollar invested in workplace wellness: that's over 400% ROI. (Source: Art of Health Promotion Newsletter, Vol. 6, No. 6, January/February 2003.) Here are a few actual examples:

  • Bank of America: Cost-benefit ratio of 1 to 5.96. This was a 496% ROI or a savings of $496.00 per year per employee for every $1.00 invested.
  • Los Angeles Fire Department: Cost-benefit ratio of 1 to 8.80. This was a 780% ROI or a savings of $780.00 per year per employee for every $1.00 invested.
  • Canada Life Insurance Company: Cost-benefit ratio of 1 to 4.85. This was a 385% ROI or a savings of $385.00 per year per employee for every $1.00 invested.
  • These numbers show actual dollar savings as a result of reduced absenteeism, sick leave and attrition related to illness. They do not show the dollar value of increased productivity from healthier employees.
